Dear Genius,

While researchers around the world work on a vaccine and treatment to COVID-19, and governments work on getting testing kits out faster, LSHTM believes it could have dogs trained and sniffing out the virus by summer.

Could this be a poetic part of solving the crisis?

Last week, Pope Francis called the coronavirus pandemic one of “nature’s responses” to humanity's actions, writing “We did not respond to the partial catastrophes. Who now speaks of the fires in Australia, or remembers that 18 months ago a boat could cross the North Pole because the glaciers had all melted? Who speaks now of the floods?"

“I don't know if these are the revenge of nature, but they are certainly nature's responses,"

Last month, UN’s Environment Chief, Inger Anderson said of the pandemic, “Nature is sending us a message.” He added:

“We are intimately interconnected with nature, whether we like it or not. If we don’t take care of nature, we can’t take care of ourselves. And as we hurtle towards a population of 10 billion people on this planet, we need to go into this future armed with nature as our strongest ally.”

Who better to turn to in a time of crisis than man’s best friend.

The group has launched an Indiegogo campaign to support the project, which you can support here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/md-dogs-against-covid19#/
