Everyone has different types of friends and family members, who play various roles in their lives. There are those you have fun with, those who advise you, those who support you, those who push you to be your best self and more. Some friends even perform multiple roles.

That said, working with a friend, while it can be rewarding, also provides unique challenges that can affect both your business and your friendship. It's a slippery slope that you have to approach with mindfulness and intention. Whether you work with friends at a company or hired them as an employee for your own startup, here's how you can navigate working with friends and families:

1. Set clear expectations
Communication is key. Before you both start working together, lay out the rules and make sure you agree on each other's role. If possible, decide who will have the ultimate say if there is a disagreement because there will be times in the partnership where you must be able to agree to disagree, and still make a decision to move forward. Being clear on what you can expect from one another will set the tone for the partnership and serve as a working guide.

2. Schedule regular check-ins

Create an environment where you can openly talk to your friend and express concerns or praise small victories. Having weekly touch base calls or meetings will address any issues that could get in the way of your working relationship. If one person is overwhelmed, figure out how you can help each other, or if something is going on in their life and they need to take some time off, come up with an action plan together. Communication is the connecting thread of your relationship, so be intentional about making time for each other, both at work and outside of work.

3. Spend time outside of work

Your time spent working together isn't quality friendship time. Make sure you're clear on the distinction and carve out time for both. It's easy to stay busy with your work, but before you know it, your friendship may become a working relationship only. That's why it's essential to spend time outside the office, doing things that you both love. This will keep things in perspective and may even smooth out any wrinkles at work.
