When your child gets sick, it can be a worrying time for you,and it can make your child unhappy and irritable. For the most part, they will get colds and other viruses that will come and go without a big issue. However, when they come into contact with chickenpox, then there are a few things you can do to try and make them feel more comfortable.
What is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Although vaccines have proved effective at prevention, there is no specific cure. Contracting chickenpox usually results in a rash with a mild fever and itching. It is highly contagious, so if you or your child has it, then you are best to stay isolated until the symptoms have disappeared which is usually one to two weeks. If of course, you are at all concerned, then you should seek the advice of your doctor.
Herbal Remedies
There are some herbal remedies that can be effective against the symptoms of chickenpox. For example, St. John’s Wort is effective at attacking viruses and reducing pain, it can usually be used as an oil for treating the rash. Another treatment is Burdock; thisis used as an essential oil under the supervision of an herbalist. Burdock reduced fever and help with the skin damage caused by the spots. Other good remedies are Aloe Vera, which when rubbed on the skin, will help to heal the spots and reduce inflammation.
Fevers
A common symptom of chickenpox is a fever; although it is usually mild, you should still look to treat it with painkillers that are safe for children. If you have young children under the age of two, then you should seek the advice of your doctor before giving painkillers. They may also be able to give you other advice on treatment. You should also ensure that the room they are staying in is comfortable for them. You can place an infrared heater in the room such as those on Hot Home Air, and make sure a window can be opened.
Bathing
One of the most annoying parts of chickenpox is the itching skin. It can lead to children scratching off their spots which can them become infected or leave a scar. To help with the itching, you can try adding some colloidal oatmeal powder to their bath. It has been found to help reduce the itching and soothe the skin. Another good ingredient in the bath is baking soda. It has similar properties to oatmeal and is often readily available in most houses. You should add half a cup to a shallow bath, or a full cup to a deep bath. Doing this once a day will help to soothe the skin and stop the itching.
Contracting chickenpox isn’t nice for your children, but with these remedies, you should be able to make them feel a little better. As always, if you are concerned, you should seek help from your doctor.
