1. Spelling and Grammatical Errors


It may seem obvious that you should have a resume free of spelling and grammatical errors. Yet, this is one that tops the list when it comes to resume mistakes that serve as deal breakers for recruiters and those browsing resumes. In fact, recently on Quora, the question of which resume deal breakers were the worst for recruiters was answered many times with spelling and grammatical errors.

When writing your resume, have someone else give it a look-over just in case there is an error that you missed. A second pair of eyes never hurts, and at times it can be hard to spot any mistakes when you are the one writing the resume.


Something else you can do is to have a tool such as Grammarly screen your resume and alert you if something needs to be changed. You can also try printing out your resume so that you can review it this way.

2. Incorrect/Missing Information


A resume is supposed to assist you in landing an interview. Therefore, you want your information to be correct so that recruiters may be able to contact you. You also do not want to be missing any pertinent information that a resume needs. Also, think of how it looks to a recruiter if you do not present a full, correct resume. How well would you be able to complete the job if hired?


Also, you need to be careful regarding the format and location of your contact information. Do not add this to the Header area of your resume if it is a Word document, and avoid placing it in as an image. Applicant tracking systems will not be able to see this, and will, therefore, mark your resume as incomplete in regards to your contact information.


3. Unprofessional Email Address


While you may have received some jabs in school for not having an "original" email address, these can actually cause more harm than good when it comes to landing a job interview. When writing out your resume, it is best to use a professional email address that will not push recruiters away from the idea of interviewing you. Let your email address speak to who you are, such as your name, not an alter ego you wish you were. Your glowing qualifications are not always enough to save a mistake like your email address not being professional.


4. Outdated/Irrelevant Information


Outdated information or including information that is not needed on a resume may end up getting your resume sent to the waste bin. It's important for recruiters to see that you are up-to-date in regards to resume standards. Don't include your hobbies, age, marital status, or anything of the like. It could also set you up for being terminated due to discriminatory reasons. A good rule of thumb is to not add anything that is not related to the job that you are applying for.

 

5. Failure to Show Your Results


A recruiter wants to see how you will benefit their company, and therefore it behooves you to mention the results you achieved in previous positions. You want to show quantifiable results, such as business growth and increased sales. It's not enough in today's world to simply have job "responsibilities". Make your results clear in your resume for better success in landing your interview.
